Quick Selection Tool

I spent a long time trying to decide what I wanted to write about next on my blog. I have been getting great demand for more Photoshop tutorials and how-too’s but I really wanted to do something just a little more personal. So after some long thought I would tell you what tools I love in Photoshop, then tell you how to use them. I don’t want you to get bored so I’m only going to do one at a time. This one might seem a little  boring but i think it might be what i use most.

Quick Selection

Location: The photo above shows where the Quick selection tool is located. If you do not see this tool in the location shown then Right click and you will see a drop down box appear that says magic wand tool and quick selection. Click on the Quick selection tool and then it will be ready to use.

How to use: If you again look at the picture there is a bar that shows all the information of the tool. you will see the Quick selection icon, then beside that one with a + sign and one beside that with a -. Quick selection allows you to add and subtract things from you selected area. Unlike other selection tools that make you carefully trace what you want selected, this allows you to do your sections really fast.

Why I love it: Being a photographer there there are often many things that you can not control. like a venues lighting system. It might never be bright enough to get a prefect shot. You go to brighten your image but soon find that the subject is to bright and background still needs brightening. So the fix for this is to select one area at a time and brighten them to a prefect light. I like the quick selection tool because it allows me to do things fast. When you have 100 images you wish to edit time is an issue, but even if you only have one image time is important.

Cons: Only one small thing i could say I wish to change about this tool. I wish that there was a way for it to remember what you have selected. I often have to select the same person more then once to edit, curves, levels, hue etc, each time you edit a selection you must re-select it to edit the next area. example: you select an person you change the curves of the area you selected and then must re-select the person in order to change the levels of that area. I want some kind of memory built into this tool.

I very rarely use this. The magic wand has many more features which i prefer. One thing you didn’t mention was about the refine edge tools which is also located on that bar.

Lots of people should find this useful!
